Scandinavian garden for a Japanese villa of 1905 in Kaliningrad. Thoughtful restoration honoring the past and considering the future.
The villa's location is the historical district of Amalienau, famous for its abundance of architectural landmarks. Our task was to create a Scandinavian garden that resonates with the spirit of the place and the client's family values.

The Scandinavian garden features a varied terrain and is divided into open and private levels. In this project, we integrated the house's architecture into the landscape: capturing the rhythm of the facade's windows and reflecting it in the shrubs planted nearby. We succeeded in harmonizing nature with architecture, creating natural backstage areas that conceal the masters' privacy. We arranged a fireplace in a hidden spot among centuries-old trees – a place where the whole family can gather, enjoy long evening conversations, and watch the flames dance with calming logs crackle.

The area is framed by large trees with wide-spreading crowns providing light shade and coolness on a hot day. On the summer terrace, we set up a round flat fountain. The water surface mirrors the sun's rays and spreads sunbeams throughout the area.

They weave among the symmetrically arranged trees, creating intricate patterns. The entire territory is paved with different paving stones: aged clinker and luminous granite with metallic inclusions. Styled like 20th-century brass lanterns, the light fixtures divide the area into several green rooms, visually expanding the space. Each room has its unique atmosphere, and thus its own plants. We brought southern nature to the plot with the smoked tree, the Katsura tree, the butterfly bush, and the almond. Each element of the Scandinavian Garden pays homage to the time and history of the place. We don't seek to replicate it, but through patina and textures, we keep in touch with it.
