ZYLT

SYLT | Зюльт
A garden like the wild Isle of Zylt, featuring eight-meter-high cliffs, a flower-filled valley on the hills, swings on the headland, and spots to watch breathtaking sunsets by the river.

The client is passionate about the nature of the German island of Zylt, also known as the 'Queen of the North Sea'. That’s why the plot he has bought resembling an island is next to the river, on a large hilly area of 3 hectares.

For this location, we deployed a complex system of connections. We needed to account for both the on-site wildlife and some future buildings (a garage, a children’s house, a patio), to create a developed network of alleys and paths that will allow for family time and recreation, and to consider organizing comfortable five- and eight-meter slopes heading to water. The goal was to arrange a stylish patio area as the main recreation area located on the headland.

We strengthened the foliage surrounding the main house to keep the area closed off from the outside. The open front lawn was preserved. We slightly cleared it off the trees and shaped more massive shrubs. We arranged a circle inside the forest. All the walking pathways lead to this timber deck element, which serves as the plot’s woodland heart. We located some objet d’art along the paths. The potager was hidden behind the garage, inside an orchard area that is out of sight during cold seasons.

We built two side viewpoints at the area with a precipice since the height difference above the river there could reach up to eight meters. One of the viewpoints has chairs and glass fencing. The other got a plunge pool so that the residents and guests could spend time there on the ghost terrace and enjoy river views.

A unique element of the garden is a valley of flowers. It serves as a primary route and a unifying design for the entire plot. It starts from the house entrance and runs between the main house, the children’s house, and goes out into the ravine, and further down to the river providing both aesthetics and biodrainage. Besides the plot hosts a fruit orchard, a mix of woodland and meadow flora ensuring continuous flowering at different times of the year.
