In Karelian Isthmus, there is the Mednoe (Copper) Lake surrounded by dense forests. This is a place for someone who knows their own strength. That's exactly who the owner of the big house turned out to be. He came to us wanting a legend — a garden with real presence and power.
The significant height difference (almost three meters) on the plot forced everything to fit into its proper place during the concept drafting. The garden was waiting for us to paint on a grand scale.
The junipers spread out across the center of the plot. The rare plants were transported from a large European nursery, where they had been raised for decades. Their dense greenery naturally overlaps the trail that runs from the house to the forested area. The descent is lined with volcanic gabbro slabs, alternating with wooden terraced decks. The descent is magically captivating at dusk — the offset levels and lighting make the stairs feel like they're floating.
Alongside the quieter corners, the owners and their guests can enjoy the garden's more social spaces — a summer house, sun loungers, and an outdoor kitchen. Hedgerows on the plot and surrounding the perimeter define boundaries.
The Northern Garden looks to be a longtime resident with a story to tell you. Endlessly engaging. Every time you return, it rewards you with new feelings and a richer sensory experience. Listen to the stories held in man-sized Karelian boulders. With finding treasures — blueberries and cranberries — in the shade.
